OpenAI and the APA partner on youth mental health and AI
OpenAI announced work with the American Psychological Association on August 6 focused on youth mental health and AI.
The partnership centers on input from psychologists and researchers around teen safety, parent and caregiver support, practitioner guidance, and system gaps. This lands in the middle of a broader debate about how chatbots should respond when users, especially younger users, treat them as emotional companions or advice sources.
The hard part is product design, not just policy language: systems need boundaries that are visible in real conversations, without making useful support impossible.
