OpenAI updates GPT-5.6 Sol and expands Luna access for free users
OpenAI updated GPT-5.6 Sol in ChatGPT on August 6 and said it is expanding GPT-5.6 Luna access for Free users.
For Plus and Pro users, the Sol update is framed around more focused answers, stronger factual reliability, and a more consistent experience between quick responses and deeper reasoning. For Free users, OpenAI says Luna will become the default model, with unlimited text chats rolling out and a Think button for harder questions.
The distribution angle matters as much as the model update. OpenAI is pushing more capable models down into the free tier while reserving some controls and experiences for paid users.
